I have a spare charger, if you'd like to test with that?

What model is it? MacBook or MacBook Pro?

I reckon it's the power board in the laptop that's blown. The "Quite cheap, only $200" refers to the fact that most parts on an apple laptop motherboard are not replacable without replacing the motherboard itself. You're "in luck" that the power board is replacable. It's been a while since I pulled apart a laptop so I'm not familiar with the hardware these days, but the part is probably $150, so even if you do it yourself, you'll have to acquire the part somehow.
The other possibility is that it's just a connector that's broken and reseating/soldering the powerboard will fix it. I would consider this quite unlikely because every time I've seen this in the past ( >4 years ago, mind you) it was a broken part not a broken connection.

Honestly, the best thing to do is to take it to Mac One who do laptop repairs cheaper than NextByte. They'll probably tell you the same thing and you'll be up for $180ish to fix it.
