So I've noticed the thing I miss most about not playing WoW is that I don't get to do stupid thingstm with people I know in a game world, but the amount of time required to do said stupid thingstm far out-weights the actually doing of stupid thingstm.

So after a conversation with Umesh on Friday I thought it would be nice to find some other games to play with friends that are pretty casual. Some examples would be FPS (Quake), TBS1 (Worm World Party), RTS (Warcraft III). There is an added hitch though, I don't run windows, so some of these games aren't exactly easy to play under Linux.

So here is the idea: people tell me what multiplayer games they really like playing, and I'll see if I can hunt up some half-decent alternative of the game that are cross-platform. If there enough interest and/or suggestions, then we can start to play the occasional game. Fell free to also include other software that makes the gaming experience more fun.

Here are a few alternatives to get the ball rolling:

Open Souce/Free Games
Worms World Party
Hedgewars - a pretty good clone of the later Worms titles

Quake
ezQuakte - a prettier version of the original quake

Quake III
ioquake3

Transport Tycoon Deluxe
OpenTTD - updated version of TTD with a lot more features
Simutrans - started off as a clone of TTD, but has quite a few differences now.

Closed Source/Non-Free Games
Neverwinter Knights - Linux Client

Other Software
Ventrilo
Mumble - open source vent like application

Hamachi
OpenVPN - open source VPN client/server

Being Looked Into
Diablo II
Battlefield
Risk
Myth II

_____
1 Turn Based Strategy - not really a proper term

I would be up for that, I was recently playing Diablo 2 with a few people, which was lots of fun, I am fairly sure that will run under linux/wine

Otherwise I quite enjoy the standard FPS games too ... my favorite of all time was the original battlefield, it was so much fun flying around with tanks on the wings launching at people :P

Yeah I'm probably sure it will, though I'm trying a little experiment to see if is possible to find open-source/mostly free games that are cross platform

There are quite a few open source FPS out there, I'll add a few more for variety (not sure there are any BF type ones though).

Doom used to give me a headache, but I would be more than up for Quake.

I should also note. If you come across any cross platform games that sound like fun, give it a mention, and I'll add it to the list.
