That really sucks. I'm all for optimal layouts but alphabetical is not it. All the vowels are on the left - surely you want to balance the oft-used keys between the hands?

I found the alphabetical thing odd as well.

Can not see it catching on.

I read somewhere that old typewriters used to be alphabetical, but they changed it to an early form of qwerty to slow people down as they were getting too many keys jamming. I can't remember where I read this though so I wouldn't take it as gospel.

(It might have been more to do with positioning keys so that the mechanims wouldn't stick together so much. But this one is just my speculation.)

I looked it up briefly last night and it seems that changing it to slow people was apocryphal... The Qwerty layout does seem to have been an effort to get the metal bars of groupings such as TH and ST to not be so close together. But then the format of how the bars were laid out changed and they kept the keyboard so you still ended up getting jams anyway.

The Dvorak keyboard was designed in order to correct some of the issues with the qwerty keyboard, but studies done in the 50's and 60's found no difference in typing speed in trained users so Dvorak fell out of fashion, I think, because it was easier to have a single layout that everyone could use and you didn't have to retrain people every time they got a new job.

Yeah, the layout for keyboards won't change just because we're far beyond the tipping point.
